In the Fraser Coast region recorded on K'gari (Fraser Island) only. Previously known as Cyathea leichhardtiana (Queensland Flora Census 2020). Stipe and rhachis blackish and very prickly (Ferns of Queensland a handbook to the ferns and fern allies S.B.Andrews).
It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is
listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.
