Species information

Asparagus aethiopicus   (L.) Oberm. WEED

This introduced groundcover is commonly known as basket asparagus.

Asparagus aethiopicus is described as a "monocot" in the Asparagaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Previously known as Asparagus densiflorus (Australian Plant Census). A category 3 restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. Also reported at Eurong K'gari (Fraser Island). https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations/103288388 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census but is not listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.

Reported at 29 Fraser Coast localities: Craignish, Sunshine Acres, Torquay, Urangan, Point Vernon, Toogoom, Kawungan, Urraween, Booral, Susan River, Dundowran Beach, Pialba, Yengarie, Glenwood, River Heads, Bauple, Tiaro, Tinana, Great Sandy Strait, Walkers Point, Howard, Burrum Heads, Maryborough, Bidwill, Walligan, Beaver Rock, Poona, Takura, Tuan.
